今回は
キャリーのために。
彼女は天使たちに選ばれ
すぐにわれわれのもとを去った、
ほんとうに幼かった・・・
アンソロジーのシアターで、小さなドラムの演奏をバックに、若い女性ダンサーが即興のダンスを披露する。黒ずくめの衣装は喪に服しているかのようだ。子どもの仕草など、パントマイムの要素を取り入れたように見える約５分間の創作舞踏。終わるとあっさりとステージ裏に姿を消した。ドラマーは見知らぬ若い男。
説明らしきものは一切ない。突然、以下のタイプ印刷されたフリップが写る。

これはYosa (no) Buson（与謝蕪村, 1716-1784）の"Elegy to the Old Man Hokuju"の第二連である。
オリジナルは「北寿老仙をいたむ」（1745）。
君をおもふて岡のべに行つ遊ぶ
をかのべ何ぞかくかなしき
この俳句とは異なる「俳体詩」と呼ばれる超江戸的な表現については、萩原朔太郎による高い評価などで有名であるが（萩原朔太郎『郷愁の詩人 与謝蕪村』、「せんすのある話39-『京都 金福寺』荘司賢太郎」、「文芸の中の女性〜与謝蕪村：春風馬堤曲（上）」参照。）、誰がメカスに教えたのだろうか。蕪村は「北寿老仙をいたむ」の他に、二篇の俳体詩、「春風馬堤曲」と「澱河歌」を書いた。いずれも安永六年（1777）出版の『夜半楽』に収められている。（潁原 退蔵「春風馬堤曲の源流」参照。）
メカスは以下のようなこの「北寿老仙をいたむ」の全体を英訳で読んで知っているはずである。

offer no flowers, and only sit here alone.

友ありき河をへだてて住にき
へげ（変化）のけぶりのはと打（うち）ちれば西吹風の
はげしくて小竹原（おざさはら）真すげはら

我庵（わがいほ）のあみだ仏ともし火もものせず

メカスが引用した第二連は、死んだ君（友）のことを思いながら、（思い出の？）岡の辺に行き、あてどなく彷徨うも、その場所が悲しみの色に深く染まる。そんな記憶の有り様を詠っているが、メカスにとっての、死んだ君とは一体誰なのか。キャリー（Carrie）、キャロライン（Caroline）とは黒装束で踊る若い女性ダンサーのことなのか、それとも・・・。全く分からない。
